A few weeks ago, I wrote about how perfectionism can sometimes get in the way of my willingness to share peeks into my home. I also made a promise that I’d share part of my home with you all, even if it’s not quite perfect. It took me a while to finally act on that promise, but here it is (finally!): a sneak peek into our living room!
When we first moved in, our living room had a whole lot of classic-90s-nondescript-beige wallpaper. It was honestly kind of tough even imagining what we wanted the room to look like with that stuff everywhere. And it definitely looked weird with all of our brightly colored vintage goodies. Here’s a gander at what the room looked like when we first viewed the house:

So the next logical step felt like tackling that wallpaper. We figured that if we could just paint everything a fresh coat of white, it would give us a bit more freedom to experiment with color and layout and such. Removing the wallpaper was no easy task, and what was left behind wasn’t exactly pretty. There were some parts of the wall itself that needed repairs, so for almost a full month this last summer, we lived in what basically felt like a haunted house. I don’t recommend it.

Once we finally covered up that haunted plaster with a fresh coat of white, we felt like we practically had a new home! Suddenly we were willing to experiment with color again, and we even rearranged the furniture just about every other week (much to my husband’s dismay – hah!), until we finally settled into what we’re living with now. There’s still work to be done, and I really need to get over my fear of putting nails in the wall, but it’s coming together, and it’s definitely starting to feel more like home.
So without further ado, welcome to our living room!
Lovely and bright, can I move in?
Thanks, Carla! The spare room isn’t exactly blog-worthy yet, but you’re welcome to it! 😉
Such a lovely, colorful space! I love that each piece has a story and how they all work together to tell YOUR story. Plus putting the couch in the corner with the shelf behind it is such a cool idea. 🙂
Thanks for sharing, Nikki!

Thanks so much, Abby! At first we felt like we were wasting space by putting the couch in the corner, but now we love having easy access to our books, plus we get a great view of the rest of our house! Win win!
Looks great! Where did you get the chair?
Thanks, Tracy! If you’re referring to the Eames lounge, it was actually a SUPER lucky thrift store find! When I spotted it, I think I almost passed out. It cost me all of $75 – definitely a once-in-a-lifetime thrift score!
So bright and cheerful! I love how much the white paint transformed the room.
Thanks, Nicole! You and me both! I just wish that pesky old wallpaper wasn’t such a chore – otherwise I’d tackle every wallpapered room in the house right this second!
This is gorgeous, Nikki! Loving the pops of colour, and that window with the yellow pots..! 😍
Thank you, Asta! There’s still lots of work to be done, but I’m pretty happy with it – anything is better than that wallpaper was! 😉
So lovely! I can’t wait to see more of your home, Nikki! I love those yellow curtains too. It looks like they were just waiting for you to move in.
Thanks, Ashley! We love the yellow curtains, too, but they’re not in great shape. We’ve really been taking our time trying to find a replacement, though – they’re just so sunny and cheerful! 🙂
